Los Angeles, California

Queen of Hearts

Los Angeles, California, marks Lady Georgiana Rannoch’s arrival in the world of Hollywood: after a long rail journey, the city appears as a bright, theatrical contrast to the economic hardship visible in New York, and as the setting for her first meeting with the film industry’s hospitality and spectacle.

Arrival by Rail

The approach unfolds in stages. After crossing the mountains, Lady Georgiana and her mother change trains and glimpse San Francisco Bay before continuing on the Coast Starlight. The inland stretch offers repeated golden hills; after they fall asleep, the sparkling Pacific Ocean appears beside the train. They breakfast before pulling into the Los Angeles station, where the journey’s changing landscape gives way to arrival in the city.

The City and Hollywood

On the station platform, Lady Georgiana spots the Hollywood sign above the hills and feels an immediate leap of excitement: the long-anticipated destination is real. The drive along Sunset Boulevard reinforces the contrast between expectation and experience. New buildings in bright pastel shades line the street, a tramline runs down its center, and motorcars crowd the road. To Lady Georgiana, the Depression that was so visible in New York seems not to have struck here.

Welcome and Setting

Cy Goldman cannot leave the film set, so his assistant, Ronnie, meets Lady Georgiana and her mother at the station, arranges porters, and sends them onward in a long black motorcar while their maids and luggage follow by taxicab. He takes them to the Beverly Hills Hotel, where the arrival becomes an introduction to a carefully staged luxury: the pink hotel is surrounded by palm trees and tropical plants, and uniformed young men lead the visitors through the grounds rather than into the main building.

Their accommodation is a private bungalow beyond a sparkling swimming pool. Bougainvillea spills around its front door, while bird-of-paradise and hibiscus line the path. The dazzling sunlight, vivid colors, and heavy floral perfume make the grounds feel like a fantasyland. The city’s narrative significance lies in this abrupt change of atmosphere: the train’s golden hills and ocean give way to Hollywood’s sign, traffic, pastel architecture, and hotel spectacle, turning arrival into a threshold between the hardships left behind and the glamorous world Lady Georgiana has come to encounter.
